Maximum sustainable yield is one way of viewing it. But there are two sides. It's like scales. You can limit your taking. You can also grow the giving.
You can increase the carrying capacity of the area by using evolution as a tool. Ecological intensification is useful then. And growing the capactity of soil by increasing micro-organisms, fungi and organic matter too... Take yeast as an example. Terra preta. Bacteria. Human cells. You feed them and they automatically evolve into more, bigger, better...
