Ha, another one in the tech+ camp. Do people need to change? Or does tech+ have to become more imaginative? I think the last. People want to have comfort and who can blame them? Nature is simple. Nature is abundant. It's just a matter of maximizing function and minimizing effort (oh, we can be lazy...)
What if the washing machine was a tiny one, 3D printed with aluminium (cheap), minimizing material by using structure for functionality? What if this aluminium was grown instead of mined (phytomining in places where there's lots of aluminium in the soil)? What if the washing machine didn't use water but ultrasonic waves to clean clothes? No longer spilling so many synthetic fibers (microplastics) into the ocean because clothes are made with biodegradable minimal fibers from abundantly available crops? And clothes not using toxic inks for color, but texture and light reflection?
It's the business models and status quo thinking that keeps us stuck now. It is as if we are still stuck with the first MS Dos computer I used in 1987. It had the size of an elephant! If we go quickly through the development stages, all the time exponentially growing and knowing what has to die quickly afterward, tech would become completely different.
The companies have to find the solutions within their business models to create maximum value with minimum matter. Lots of experience and branding for rich people is allowed, as long as they make all comfort accessible for poor communities too.
Happy imagining! And don't think it's fiction. A lot of this stuff has already been invented... Nature has all the answers...
