Agreed, Rob Walker. One route to still handle the uncertainty is to change our model from economies of scale to economies of scope. And with this, I don’t mean the regular meaning of efficiency and cost savings.

Diversity and value creation are key here. Using the power of synergy instead of scale. Using what’s already available in our companies (waste streams, stranded assets) and creating extra value with it can be our savior.

Collaboration between diverse (local) companies with the same target groups can help. Creating a multiplier effect by using each other’s waste and stranded assets. Design our processes in such a way that waste contributes to the income streams. Making upcycling possible.

Diversify our business models and make them more resilient.

Change the model from linear, to circular. And even to regenerative. It can be done. And luckily many entrepreneurs are learning…
